The first meeting on the Global Project “Reorienting Education and Training Systems to Improve the Lives of Indigenous Youth” took place in Almaty, Kazakhstan, on June 26-28, 2017. The purpose of the meeting was to plan the implementation of the project in Central Asia.
UNESCO Almaty Cluster Office supported the UNESCO Chair in Reorienting Teacher Education to Address Sustainability from Canada and the Regional Environmental Centre for Central Asia (CAREC) to launch this global research project in Central Asia. Around 20 experts from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Russia, Canada, CAREC and UNESCO participated in the meeting.Throughout 2017-2020, the project will aim at generating academic research into how schools and education systems could better meet the education needs of the indigenous youth in or from traditional communities. The research will also develop recommendations to assist education and community leaders to improve the level of individual and community well-being for its target groups and consequently the overall quality of education and sustainable development in Central Asian countries.
The meeting discussed the role of universities, research modalities, engaging local schools and communities, as well as using the project digital communication platform. The meeting established the project organizational structure and planned future steps of the project in Central Asia.
